an IMPROV QUILTING LIVESTREAM WORKSHOP from the heart

Sunday, July 13, 2025, 12-4 pm Eastern / Quilt-along & Demos
Tuesday, July 15, 3-4:30 pm Eastern / Office Hours Q&A + Sharing

Live on Zoom / Both sessions will be recorded.

What would Diversity, Equity and Inclusion look like in an improv quilt?

If you have a lot of orphan blocks, pieced scraps, and even vintage fixed pattern blocks made by someone else, this is your jam. Embrace your creativity and abandon the pattern police for a wild, mix-and-match mashup adventure!

Discover new aesthetic pathways when you compose with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in mind. Learn how to mix wildly different patterns and color-ways into a single lively quilt, where orphans, outliers and oddballs come together in a dynamic dialogue.

Free on-demand access to the livestream recording of the workshop through October 31, 2025

Class size: 50 participants. Equity seats are very limited and reserved for those with less economic privileges. PLEASE make sure you qualify.

**NOTE: There are no refunds or transfers available after purchase.

In this class you will….

  • Create new patchwork from randomly drawn prompts to mix with your orphans.

  • Experience creative flow through play, and spontaneous piecing with a time limit.

  • Practice looking for similarities and differences to discover relationships between seemingly unrelated patchwork.

  • Learn DEI composition strategies such as — juxtaposition, bridging, asymmetrical balance, contrast and inclusion.

  • Discover narratives hidden below the surface, when unrelated patterns collide.

  • Practice centering to harness your emotion energy, presence and truth.

  • Learn basic ruler free piecing techniques, including template free curves and darting fixes, order of sewing and using filler to equalize different size sections.

  • Enjoy access to pre-recorded technique demos and mindset resources, along with lots of live demos and hands-on sewing.

Use your full lexicon of patterns to craft a composition of narratives that connect in unpredictable, beautifully human ways at the intersection where differences meet. —Sherri Lynn Wood

It took me 20 years of improv quilting before I realized that design strategies focused on sameness, equality and symmetrical balance worked for traditional fixed pattern quilts but not for improvisation. It’s like comparing a planned neighborhood to a lively city street that has grown naturally.

Improv quilting embraces and thrives on the juxtaposition of mismatched patterns and colors, allowing them to coexist and connect in unpredictable, beautifully human ways.

From my sewing room to yours…

My goal as an improviser and teacher is to hand to you a range of pattern possibilities, so that you can discover YOUR way of making patterns. The beauty of improv is you can’t do it wrong!

Whether you are new to quilting, to improv quilting, or improv quilting we all have the freedom to begin where we are and continue to grow. Building on content from The Improv Handbook For Modern Quilters, my workshops encourage ALL participants to tap into their beginner’s mind.

Materials

  • Bring orphan blocks and previously pieced segments, that are looking for their quilt home - they don’t have to match!

  • Fabric scraps of all sizes and colors in a variety of values, neutrals, shades, tints, brights.

Tools & Supplies

  • Large cloth scissors / Rotary cutter and cutting mat – no ruler necessary

  • Pins / Tailors chalk or marking tool

  • Sewing machine with neutral medium value thread

  • Ironing station

A very rough draft, but this is where I’m currently at with my DEI quilt composition after yesterday’s workshop. I think it has potential!

These patchwork segments are quite different. Is it possible to bring them together into a cohesive conversation in the same quilt? Not sure but staying open and curious about the possibilities!
