I work with recycled fabrics so my color choices are always on some level dictated by what I am able to find. That said, I always find the range of color available in the second hand market is infinitely richer than what is for sale in even the largest primary market fabric store. I love the hunt. It is part of the process for me!

Sustainable Materials Convo
Watch this space for a conversation on sourcing sustainable materials. This will be posted after January 18.
Workshop Materials
Small to large scraps, fat quarters, yardage from your existing stash in a variety of values, neutrals, shades, tints, brights in solids and/or prints.
Upcycled clothing, sheets, draperies and linens are also suitable.
Keep your color selections open, we will build our color compositions intuitively by harnessing our emotional energy.
It’s improv! You have the power to make it work, no matter what materials you decide to use.
Tools & Supplies
Large cloth scissors – make sure they are sharp and functional
Rotary cutter and cutting mat – no ruler necessary
Seam ripper
Pins
Tailors chalk or marking tool
Thread – medium gray or yellow blends well with everything
Sewing machine
Ironing station — steam recommended or spray bottle
Fabric Prep Supplies (optional but may be useful depending on your materials)
Spray starch - buy a new bottle if your old one is clogged - helpful to stabilize silk, linen, t-shirts and lightweight/loose weaves and knit materials
Freezer paper - helpful for stabilizing sweater knits and lycra type materials
Fray Check - fabric glue helpful for loose weaves
Hand sewing kit - to applique lace edges and other architectural details in clothes
Iron on interfacing - highly optional, only use for thin precious materials that you absolutely must have in the quilt, because it’s meaningful - like a threadbare t-shirt you wore in high-school.

Darting Tutorial
With ruler-free piecing there are times when things just don’t lie flat. When that happens say “WHOOPEE!” and take a dart. Here’s how.

New to Sherri’s Workshops?
We asked BravePatch members who’ve previously taken a workshop from Sherri what they would tell someone who's new to improv or new to Sherri's workshops to expect? Here are their responses.
I encourage friends to know they will learn a whole new way of making quilts that totally represents themselves. There is no pattern, but a common theme which results in great exchange of ideas and everyone’s quilt lands up being totally different. I also add that you will not need to rush to the fabric store and spend more $$ to buy yardage for your materials…making do encouraged ~Charan Sachar
Sherri is generous and astute and will help you make the changes you want to see in your art. Get ready to grow! ~Robin Strauss
The more you release old ideas about what you SHOULD do, the more you will get out of this creative journey! ~Jill Scholtz
Try not to hold on to expectations of what you will make. Keep it simple, just relax and enjoy learning and the process of creating. Try to let go of “should” and take hold of “could.” ~Victoria Nelson
I’d tell them to get ready for a rewarding and fulfilling time. ~Sarah Olson
Expect to answer your own questions / there is no right way, only your way / multitude of options, possibilities / supported creative freedom ~Naomi van den Broek
Creative Community Mentoring
Our community is built on a heart-centered approach that recognizes improvisational quilt making as a profound creative life practice.
We get your improv quilts and value the unique vision and voice that you bring. We welcome you into this space as both mentee and mentor. Our commitment to community mentoring and creative connections is the soul and value of BravePatch membership.
Continue the learning with a membership to BravePatch where you’ll find connection and inspiration with other improvisors. All plans provide the same content on a sliding scale basis. Monthly plans can be found at BravePatch.school.
