FOUND COLOR Guest Speakers
Our six guests are all trailblazers at transforming color from repurposed materials into quilts that tell stories of truth and beauty. Their role is to inspire the learning community with their perspectives on the theme and get us thinking in new ways. Be a part of this vibrant conversation on FOUND COLOR and the impact of living and creating sustainably.
Each workshop in the series opens with a 20-minute presentation by a different artist/maker, followed by Q&A. Please note: the role of the guest artist is to share their unique perspectives and ignite our community conversation on the theme of Found Color. They will NOT be teaching the class.

โIn my sewing/painting practice I use entirely recycled items of clothing to create the palettes and compositions. These are my clothes, my family's clothes, my friends' clothes and sometimes clothes from the thrift store.โ

โI work with recycled fabrics so my color choices are always on some level dictated by what I am able to find. That said, I always find the range of color available in the second hand market is infinitely richer than what is for sale in even the largest primary market fabric store. I love the hunt. It is part of the process for me!โ

โColor is invited into my quilts naturally. I love the use of vintage quilts because the stains, folds, and creases embedded in the material's lifeline. The browns, the reds and the yellows act as fabric memoires. These colors mark the passage of time.โ

โI get to discover new color relationships around my classroom: in paint water dumped in the sink, magazine scraps on the floor, and on dried up paint on newspaper mixing palettes. And as a quilter, what a joy to walk into a thrift store to see all the pink clothing on one rack and to see the thousands of values and intensities, like paint colors already mixed up and ready to use in my work.โ

This program allows customers and community members the opportunity to give their textiles a new life beyond their current or previous existence, while also educating the public on how recycling and upcycling clothing and fabrics in this manner is one of the myriad of ways we all can help reduce our carbon footprint and promote a more attainable sustainable lifestyle.โ
