Monochrome + Glitter 9-Patch Quilt

from $125.00

Saturday–Sunday, February 3-4

11 am–3 pm Eastern
Live on Zoom

Why limit yourself to quilting cottons! This is your chance to luxuriate in a richness of material textures. In this workshop you will:

  • Source and prep a variety of fabric types including satin, lamé, velour, knits and more

  • Incorporate a mix of fabric types and textures with your existing quilting stash

  • Learn a stack and cut, ruler-free strip-piecing approach to the 9-patch to create a woven effect, that I developed in the early 90’s

  • Create a rich monochromatic color palette with brights (pure hues), shades (mixed with black) tints (mixed with white)

  • Explore the importance of texture and a color’s value (gray scale) in creating dynamic patterns

  • Free on demand access to the livestream recording of the workshop through August 31, 2024

*Equity seats are limited and reserved for those with less economic privileges. PLEASE make sure you qualify.

From my sewing room to yours…

My goal as an improviser and teacher is to hand to you a range of pattern possibilities, so that you can discover YOUR way of making patterns. The beauty of improv is you can’t do it wrong!

Whether you are new to quilting, to improv quilting, or improv quilting we all have the freedom to begin where we are and continue to grow. Building on content from The Improv Handbook For Modern Quilters, my workshops encourage ALL participants to tap into their beginner’s mind.

Sewing machine, ironing station, rotary cutter/mat, scissors required + fabric stash, scraps or upcycled materials.

Guest Speaker: Sarah Nishiura

Each workshop opens with a 20-minute presentation by a different artist/maker, followed by Q&A. Please Note: The role of the guest artist is to share their unique perspectives and ignite our community conversation around color and sustainability. Sarah will not be teaching the workshop.

I work with recycled fabrics so my color choices are always on some level dictated by what I am able to find. That said, I always find the range of color available in the second hand market is infinitely richer than what is for sale in even the largest primary market fabric store. I love the hunt. It is part of the process for me!

—Sarah Nishiura
