Intuitive Color Strip Piecing

from $125.00

Saturday–Sunday, February 17–18

11 am–3 pm Eastern
Live on Zoom

Strip or string piecing is an age old strategy for including thinnest of scraps to create a new fabric. In this workshop, we will celebrate maker Anna Williams for her significant contributions to the genre of string-pieced quilts. On our own strip piecing journeys we will:

  • Source color intuitively through memory, mood and present space

  • Practice ruler-free strip piecing with a variety of material types, including corduroy, satin, velvet and knits

  • Experiment with three methods of choosing—random, spontaneous and planned

  • Break free of fixed pattern tendencies to make things match

  • Discover and move beyond habitual color preferences

  • Create diverse sets of strip pieced “characters” through line, rhythm, color, scale and texture

  • Learn strategies for combining your string sets to populate a dynamic quilt story

  • Free on demand access to the livestream recording of the workshop through August 31, 2024

Strip pieced sets created in this class may also be used in upcoming FOUND COLOR workshop compositions.

From my sewing room to yours…

My goal as an improviser and teacher is to hand to you a range of pattern possibilities, so that you can discover YOUR way of making patterns. The beauty of improv is you can’t do it wrong!

Whether you are new to quilting, to improv quilting, or improv quilting we all have the freedom to begin where we are and continue to grow. Building on content from The Improv Handbook For Modern Quilters, my workshops encourage ALL participants to tap into their beginner’s mind.

Sewing machine, ironing station, rotary cutter/mat, scissors required + fabric stash, scraps or upcycled materials.

Guest Speaker: Beverly Y. Smith

Each workshop opens with a 20-minute presentation by a different artist/maker, followed by Q&A. Please Note: The role of the guest artist is to share their unique perspectives and ignite our community conversation around color and sustainability. Beverly will not be teaching the workshop.

Color is invited into my quilts naturally. I love the use of vintage quilts because the stains, folds, and creases embedded in the material's lifeline. The browns, the reds and the yellows act as fabric memoires. These colors mark the passage of time.
