Trailblazers: Britches Quilt Tribute

from $185.00

Saturday–Sunday, March 2–3
Saturday, March 9

11 am–3 pm Eastern
Live on Zoom

Tell the story, piece a quilt by highlighting the embodied, architectural elements of clothing that represents your inner little one from another era, a relationship between you and a family member or friend, your gender or cultural identity, an imaginary future self, your inner hero, or clothing from a loved one who has passed away, or some other significant life passage. We will celebrate maker Arbie Williams for elevating the “britches quilt” to an expressive art form. In this 12 hour intensive workshop you will:

  • Source, prepare, highlight and preserve the architectural features of clothing

  • Learn how to equalize, stabilize and combine multiple fabric types and weights in a single quilt

  • Discover the heart of the clothing items to tell our significant stories

  • Harness emotional energy to build a composition from a heart centered, restorative space

  • Dive into tricky piecing situations and composition engineering and order of sewing

  • Learn ruler-free piecing techniques, as well as hand piecing functional and decorative strategies

  • Share your surprises, discoveries and satisfactions to find your creative edge

  • Free on demand access to the livestream recording of the workshop through August 31, 2024

*Equity seats are limited and reserved for those with less economic privileges. PLEASE make sure you qualify.

From my sewing room to yours…

My goal as an improviser and teacher is to hand to you a range of pattern possibilities, so that you can discover YOUR way of making patterns. The beauty of improv is you can’t do it wrong!

Whether you are new to quilting, to improv quilting, or improv quilting we all have the freedom to begin where we are and continue to grow. Building on content from The Improv Handbook For Modern Quilters, my workshops encourage ALL participants to tap into their beginner’s mind.

Sewing machine, ironing station, rotary cutter/mat, scissors required + fabric stash, scraps or upcycled materials.

Guest Speaker: Russell Barratt

Each workshop opens with a 20-minute presentation by a different artist/maker, followed by Q&A. Please Note: The role of the guest artist is to share their unique perspectives and ignite our community conversation around color and sustainability. Russell will not be teaching the workshop.

I’m always delighted by the effect colors immediately have on each other. I’ll often choose to start with a color or tone that’s not my favorite, it somehow helps me to find a combination that takes me by surprise and begins a new story.

—Russell Barratt
