Denim Diamonds Quilt

from $95.00

Saturday–Sunday, April 27–28

11 am–2 pm Eastern
Live on Zoom

Denim jeans are one of the most common clothing items worn worldwide. Studies indicate that 2.16 million tons of waste is generated from jeans annually. All the more reason to remake this durable material into gorgeous functional quilts! In this workshop, we will celebrate artist Rosie Lee Tompkins for her radical use of texture and angles in her quilts. On our own diamond journeys we will:

  • Explore texture and weight in our patchwork

  • Source and prep denim jeans, wool, and velour to supplement our quilting stashes

  • Explore and highlight the architecture of pants

  • Learn ruler-free piecing techniques with wool, velour and existing quilting stash as sashing between denim sections to reduce bulky seams

  • Incorporate angles to gently bend and build naturally shaped rows without rulers or templates to create a dynamic diamond pattern and composition.

  • Learn strategies for quilting and tying denim quilts by hand

  • Free on demand access to the livestream recording of the workshop through August 31, 2024

*Equity seats are limited and reserved for those with less economic privileges. PLEASE make sure you qualify.

From my sewing room to yours…

My goal as an improviser and teacher is to hand to you a range of pattern possibilities, so that you can discover YOUR way of making patterns. The beauty of improv is you can’t do it wrong!

Whether you are new to quilting, to improv quilting, or improv quilting we all have the freedom to begin where we are and continue to grow. Building on content from The Improv Handbook For Modern Quilters, my workshops encourage ALL participants to tap into their beginner’s mind.

Sewing machine, ironing station, rotary cutter/mat, scissors required + fabric stash, scraps or upcycled materials.

Guest Speaker: Sophie Rochester - founder of @yodomo.co based in London

Each workshop opens with a 20-minute presentation by a different artist/maker, followed by Q&A. Please Note: The role of the guest artist is to share their unique perspectives and ignite our community conversation around color and sustainability. Sophie will not be teaching the workshop.

Yodomo enables businesses to easily redistribute 'waste' textiles that can reused by our growing maker community, quickly growing the circularity of materials. Yodomo's mission is to increase wellbeing and promote the understanding of the reuse of materials by facilitating wider participation in making.

—Sophie Rochester - Yodomo
